Cyanogenmax - changing the 'One'

In a recent announcement on November 26, 2014, the Cyanogen Inc. granted exclusive rights on its operating system in India to Micromax Informatics, the biggest Indian smartphone gamer. This has created a stir over the issue for a company coming to India to launch its smartphone on December 2 - One from OnePlus (yes, you read that right).

For basics, Cyanogen Incorporated is an organisation that develops Cyanogenmod, a modified version of Android OS in order to boost productivity & efficiency of Android devices. For detailed information, please visit this page.

OnePlus is a chinese smartphone maker founded just an year ago. It was supposed to launch its only product - 'One' which comes with Cyanogenmod 11, more commonly known as CM11 as its main OS, on December 2 in India. But prior to that, Cyanogen Inc. announced a strategic partnership with Micromax granting the latter exclusive rights over Cyanogen's OS in India & regarding future OS updates. Now this creates an issue as far as OnePlus is concerned.

OnePlus expressed its discontent on this move by Cyanogen through an open letter dated November 28. You can read the same here. The partnership between the said parties is aimed to create a new smartphone brand by Micromax named -Yu.

For developer community, this is a significant issue prima facie. But they always have an option to 'flash' (install manually) any suitable version of Android on the One. This may not create any significant issue at all because Indian market is still dominated by Samsung & Micromax, both trying to eat each other's share for every quarter.

If you ask my opinion, Cyanogen shouldn't have done this to OnePlus. But considering Indian market, this is not an issue at all, as nearly three-fourth of population may not be aware of what this Cyanogenmod is. So they won't be bothered about One getting or not getting CM officially. Markets in India have always been price sensitive. With players like Samsung, Micromax (with its own products other than CM) & Motorola, this partnership won't change horizon of smartphone industry. It remains to be seen whether Micromax markets this well or not. Till then, go and get your maths right. OnePlus One, or 1+1 ;-)
